I Found a Treasure Map!

It's good to know that whoever remodeled this house some 25 years ago had a good sense of humor. Checkout the messages I found behind the wallpaper.

This one says: "The money is hidden behind the third row of bricks in the north wall of the fireplace."

Right next to that was the following latin text: "Ad tempus homo est nihil pindar 81 AD" Anyone speak latin?

  1. That's so funny! Makes me want to leave messages under our projects for future homeowners to discover.. sort of like a time capsule!

  2. That's great. I have seen similar messages, drawings, and quotes left by plaster and paper installers from the late 19c.

  3. My guessed-at translation would be, "To Time, Man is nothing."

The odd part is the attribution. Pindar was a Greek poet, who died in 443 BC!

I wonder if your cryptic PO got him mixed up with someone else. I don't think there was a later Pindar . . .

(Oh, yeah, and did you tear up the fireplace looking for the loot?? Hehehe!)

  5. Haven't checked the fireplace yet. I'll post more on that later...

  6. One of our rooms had quite a few drawings and things left on the walls by our PO. One of them was apparently done in indelible marker because it's still showing through 2 layers of paint :) Definitely fun to find things like this around your house. We're thinking about setting a time capsule in somewhere now :)

  7. When I replaced a wall in our den, I took an extremely newsworthy front page (Red Sox Win World Series), rolled it with the 2004 team picture, and then wrapped it in several newspaper cover bags.

It now resides inside the wall for the next person to rip that wall out.

My husband grew up in a 1785 colonial home and he tells stories of newspapers left behind in successive renovations in the 1890s, 1920s and 1940s. Beer bottles and coins as well.

  8. Isn't that where the money was hidden in that movie Candleshoe with Jodi Foster?
